The client

The RAC is one of the UK's largest and most progressive motoring organisations. With around eight million members and commercial fleet customers, it is dedicated to providing a single contact point for motorists’ needs including: home breakdown and roadside rescue, telematics, accident management, insurance, vehicle inspections and checks, and up-to-the-minute traffic and travel information through the RAC app.

The challenge

In 2013 the RAC launched RAC Telematics, a new offering that provides vehicle owners, fleet operators and insurers with a comprehensive picture of how their vans and cars are performing as well as monitoring and measuring driver behaviour. RAC Telematics uses a smart device fitted in the vehicle to collect raw data and transmit this to a management portal.

The information collated includes location tracking, fuel efficiency, vehicle health diagnostics, driver behaviour scores and industry-leading 92% accurate crash detection.

To ensure this service is fully functional, however, the RAC needs the devices to always be connected and providing reliable data. This requires optimum network coverage, as well as a simple method of monitoring the entire estate in order to identify any anomalies.

As the RAC is a prestigious business, where success has been built on reputation, it needed a connectivity partner that also shared the same ethos and standards. This would be critical when creating confidence in the new product and service.

The solution

From the initial trial onwards, the RAC has worked with next generation IoT connectivity experts M2M Intelligence to design and deploy a reliable and cost effective solution for this new service.

M2M Intelligence was able to maximise the coverage area by fitting the RAC Telematics devices with multi-network SIM cards. These allow data to be transmitted over any of the UK’s four mobile operators’ networks and multiple operators in Europe.

This means that customers are guaranteed the best service the RAC can possibly provide. With no steering or network preference, the RAC devices are able to connect to the best available signal at all times.  

M2M Intelligence also provides the RAC with real-time visibility over the entire SIM estate via the M2M-i Insight portal. This integrated management system provides unparalleled levels of control over the roll-out of new devices by simplifying activation and giving the RAC a granular level view all its data SIMs on one easy-to-use dashboard.

The results

M2M Intelligence provided the RAC with a reliable and cost-effective solution that allowed the RAC to launch a new product to a global market with absolute confidence.

Reliable connection

A reliable connection that allows RAC customers to communicate remotely has provided a major advantage. Vehicles travelling through a range of geographic locations, with varying levels of signal, can always connect to the best available network.

“M2M’s solution has removed the ‘what if?’ for drivers – they are now safe in the knowledge that their vehicle is communicating around the clock wherever they are,” said Nick Walker, managing director of RAC Telematics.

A trusted supplier    

In one scenario, the RAC had a customer located in an area of the Scottish Highlands where signal was notoriously poor. Although the RAC works with a range of mobile network operators and suppliers, this was a situation where deploying M2M Intelligence’s multi-network SIMs would help hugely with performance.

Complete visibility

M2M Intelligence’s Insight Portal has allowed the RAC to access a constant view of their SIM estate in real-time. M2M worked with the RAC to integrate the Insight portal with the RAC’s own telematics platform.

This has provided the RAC with complete visibility – allowing them to access the number of SIMs currently operating and key metrics on each.
